Many older usb-serial cables had a Prolific chipset and drivers for those chipsets can be a nightmare at times. I've now switched to cables with FTDI chipsets and they work out of the box.

FT232RL is FTDI and has good support for windows drivers. (but we had that bricking fiasco) CH340G is the Chinese one. CP2102 is Silicon Labs. Good win driver support.
