WebThe canboulay riots started in February 1881 in Port of Spain, the capital of Trinidad and in the southern cities of San Fernando and Princes Town in February 1884. When the emancipated slaves started celerbating their freedom, they would burn sugar canes which they called “cannes brulees” then called canboulay. WebThe sailor outfit is decorated with ribbons, medals, braiding, swans down and other embellishments to match the headpieces. One of the most known and beloved of the Traditional Carnival Characters, the Sailor Mas was introduced in the 1880s when British, French and American naval ships came to Trinidad.
